Registration for summer eLearning (online) courses is now underway and there are even more opportunities than ever. We are excited to offer courses that are fully online, as well as blended courses where students benefit from a combination of online and face-to-face instruction.

Beta Sponsor Mrs. Shea wants to thank everyone for the shoe donations. Our Beta students collected over 300 pairs of shoes for the #Megsmiles shoe drive. The event collected over 4,000 pairs of shoes to send to refugees oversees. Thank you!
Seeing our students’ works at the Arts & Sciences Festival yesterday was great fun! I hope you were able to make it. Browsing our talented students’ products always makes your principal proud.
Hearing the jazz band last Friday as they performed in our library during all four lunches was thrilling. These students entertained us for two hours! Thank you, jazz band students and Mrs. Peters!
From Mrs. Nuckols: Open gym for girls basketball will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
From our PTSA: We are collecting school supplies for teacher appreciation week, May 2-6. A box will be set up in the main office. Teachers always need boxes of tissues, bottles of hand sanitizer, and whiteboard markers, but donations of all sorts are welcome.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is coming up on April 30. This is a great way to safely dispose of any unused or expired medication. Please pass this on and get the information out! Here are a few facts about why this is such an important initiative:
- The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends- and the home medicine cabinet.
- Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse.
- The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America.
- Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment!

West Side Story Coming to PHHS: The spring musical West Side Story will be presented on April 27 and 28 at 6:00 p.m. and on April 29 and 30 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. You will not want to miss this play. The love story at the core of the musical parallels Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The evening will be enjoyable for the whole family with songs and choreography that you will not soon forget. Come out to see our incredibly talented drama students!
Senior Trip Information: The senior class will be taking their annual trip to Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, on Monday, June 6, 2016. ***We still have tickets left. Permission slips and money will be collected this week before school and during study block until all tickets are sold.***
- Buses will leave Patrick Henry at 8:30 am and return at 5:30 pm. All students going on the trip are required to ride the bus. Students may not drive themselves.
- The cost of the trip will be $70, which includes the bus and the tickets. Students with a season pass will be required to pay $30 for the bus. Please bring extra money for food or souvenirs.
- Be advised that the trip must be paid for in advance. No money will be accepted after this date. Checks should be made out to Patrick Henry High School.
- Students must submit the attached signed permission slip and money to reserve spots.
- If any student is asked to leave the park for any reason, parents will be required to pick up their student up at the park upon contact by a chaperone. If you have any questions please call or email Mrs. Allen (Fallen@hcps.us) or Mrs. Markwood (EMarkwood@hcps.us) at 365-8000.
After-school math remediation continues this week in preparation for May SOL tests. Remediation will be offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. starting April 5 and ending May 12. Algebra students will start in Room 410, geometry students will start in Room 602, and Algebra II students will start in Room 403. Snacks will be provided. Unless otherwise notified, students must have transportation to leave at 4:45 p.m. All algebra, geometry, and Algebra II students are welcome to attend as many sessions as possible.
From the PH SCA: We will have our annual Spring Harvest Food Drive during the month of April. The food items collected will go to WHEAT (Western Hanover Emergency Action Team). PHHS collected 521 lbs of food last year, and over 900 lbs the year before. The SCA officers will come around to A2 classes during study block once a week to collect and count food items.
Prom Information: Prom 2016 is on Saturday, May 7. Tickets are $30 each and will be on sale before and after school in the commons from Monday, April 25, through Friday, April 29. Before students can purchase tickets, they must pay all outstanding fines, fees, and dues. PH juniors and seniors bringing a date who does not attend PH, must have a guest permission slip form completed before purchasing tickets. The guest permission slip is available in the front office. From The College of William & Mary, June 26-July 1:
Leadership by Design is an opportunity for students to learn from William & Mary faculty, staff, and students about leadership opportunities, service opportunities, and core principles that drive social change in a residential setting. The program, developed in partnership with the Leadership by Design program at Shenandoah University, which can be found here, is designed for 10th and 11th grade students interested in attending college or university, whether that is William & Mary or any other institution. It is a great opportunity for students to gain exposure to and comfort with college life. We are truly seeking students with varying levels of experience and exposure to higher education, interest in higher education, and more. We really are interested in having your students involved in this experience. The program is $600 and there is some available financial aid, so please encourage students to register and apply for aid! From James Madison University: The weeklong institute (July 10-16) will provide students with a great opportunity to get a close glimpse of college life. They will have the opportunity to live in a college dorm, sample small honors-type classes, and engage with professors and current students. Participants will hear from representatives from JMU’s Admissions Office who will explain the college admissions process, offer tips, and answer questions that the students might have. Representatives from the Career and Academic Planning Office will also provide advice regarding the selection of a major and career preparation. Honors Program staff members will explain how participation in an honors program can enhance a student’s college experience. Finally, there will be opportunities for students to participate in a variety of fun activities on and off campus. Application deadline is May 15, 2016. There is an $900 fee per student, which will cover all SHI related expenses (room and board, class materials, activity fees). Partial scholarships may be available for students with financial need. PHun Run, May 21, 9 a.m: Join the fun at Patrick Henry High School’s 2nd annual 5K Color Run/Walk! Run or walk with family and friends on our colorful course. The event is sponsored by the PH Emerging leaders. Two dollars of each registration goes to support the cross-country team. All other proceeds will go to Hanover Safe Place. From the PH Counseling Center: During the spring awards assembly, we recognize seniors who have earned the Eagle Scout designation or the Gold Award. Please send names of students who have achieved these honors to counselor Margaret Roane at MRoane@hcps.us, or call our Counseling Center at 365-8020.
As the weather warms, students and parents are asked to be mindful of the PH dress code:
- All students are to remove head coverings, including hats, caps, those considered sportswear, bandannas, and scarves upon entering the building.
- Pajamas pants including flannel are not permitted.
- Mesh or see-through clothing is not permitted.
- Jewelry and messages on outerwear such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets should not promote alcohol, tobacco, or drugs and may not be profane.
- Shoes should be worn at all times while on school grounds as a safety/health precaution. No slippers are allowed.
- Jeans with holes should not expose skin 4 inches above the knee.
- All sleeveless tops must be greater than 2 inches wide. Spaghetti straps, tank tops, racer tops, and tops with the back out are not permitted.
- Skirts, dresses and shorts should be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee.
- Jeggings, leggings, yoga pants, etc. must be worn with tops that come to at least mid-thigh.
- All tops that expose bra straps, cleavage, and the waist area are not permitted.
- The waist of pants should remain gathered around the upper hip area to avoid sagging below the hips or dragging the floor.
- T-shirts and sleeveless shirts/sweatshirts should not expose the waist area or the side underarm areas. Tank tops are not permitted.
Reminder Regarding After-School Events: Parents and students are reminded that no students are allowed to remain at PH after 3:30 p.m. to wait for athletic events to begin. Additionally, for safety reasons, students with permission to remain after hours must be with a sponsoring adult, such as a coach, the entire time.

Bridging RVA Drawing for college scholarship funds: All PH Seniors can be entered in a random drawing for a $250 scholarship funded by Bridging RVA. All you need to do is take a copy of your FAFSA one-page results or the email you received stating that your FAFSA was submitted, and give it to Mrs. Osborne in Counseling by May 17th. All entries will be placed in a bowl and TWO recipients will be drawn. That is all there is to it! If you have not already filed a FAFSA, you can do so at www.fafsa.gov. If you need help completing it, you can make an appoint with Mrs. Spaulding in Counseling. (These scholarships are funded by an award PHHS was given by Bridging RVA for the progress we have made in raising the FAFSA completion rate for PH students.)

Hanover County Public Schools is seeking the public’s input on high school mathematics textbooks that are being considered for adoption. Hanover County residents are encouraged to examine textbooks from the publishers’ series and provide written feedback.
